CHAPTER TWENTY

Terry thought about running after her. His heart was aching, and he feared that he had really done it this time. Lost her forever.

But there was no going back now. The only way he could prove to her and to everyone else that he was innocent was to find out who was behind setting him up.

When he got to the very funky house on Ninth Street in the Throgs Neck neighborhood in the Bronx, Terry wondered if he shouldn’t have brought a baseball bat with him. The streets were filled with strange pieces of junk, like a rotten mattress with two rats peering out of the middle. And a gold-plated lamp which lay in the gutter. It was pretty well smashed to bits and looked as though someone had thrown it from a rooftop. third-

Probably in the middle of a fight or a murder.

He sucked in his breath and walked up the battered steps to her stoop, then hit the button to her fourth-floor walkup.

No one answered.

Maybe he should have called her first, after all. But if he had and she was guilty it would give her a chance to prepare an alibi or just run out altogether.

He tried another button. Again, nothing. Finally, he tried a third residence and there was a hoarse answer.

“Who is it?”

“Tommy Rodriguez,” Terry said. “Rosalie’s cousin. I’m just here to drop off a package. I think her buzzer is dead.”

The front door buzzer went off and he was in.
